ixteenth century European tables seen in Paris’ Louvre and one found in Washington, D.C.’s National Gallery of Art were David’s inspiration for this table. It is solid walnut with fluted columns featuring Greek Ionic capitals and Attic (of Athens) bases. These columns were very prevalent not only in Greece but also favored in southern Italy since Roman times. Adorning both the columns and the arches are beautifully carved acanthus leaves and vines indigenous to Mediterranean regions. The table very subtly displays two crests with the Jordan Classic Furnishings Latin maxim, Semper Sapit Suprema — quest for the best.
