Early 18th Century style 22-karat Gold Gilt Gesso Chair

Javid received inspiration for this chair during a visit to the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. The carving, balance and grace of these chairs make them timeless masterpieces. Intricately carved and carefully gilded by master craftsmen in Italy, each chair is a treasure.

Gold gilding is a painstaking process of applying thin sheets of gold foil or gold leaf to a surface that has been covered with a tacky substance, usually gesso, made from ground gypsum or chalk and mixed with glue. Afterwards, the gold leaf is layered on with water then burnished with a small agate stone tool. The water-gilding process has remained unchanged for hundreds of years. It is an extremely difficult and slow process requiring artisans of great skill and practice. This is the most highly regarded technique of gold leafing and the most beautiful. And this is exactly why we sought this expertise for this chair. It is an art form whose artists are becoming very rare, making their pieces even more precious.
